Elastic Registration of two Images Spaced in Time using Traces

Registration of two images from two different dates for the early detection of skin cancer

The objective of this module is the registration of two images from two different instants of time. This is an essential element of a suite for the early detection of skin cancer.
The developed algorithms contributes to the automation of a procedure for medical diagnosis in whole body photo imaging, which are used in the early detection of potentially deadly skin cancers. The main algorithm of this module was designed as a VTK class which houses a specialized Thin Plate Spline Transform.
This module adds to the main program a tool for drawing freehand curves, which will be used to draw small pieces of curves superimposed on image features, as shown in the following figure.
Next figure shows the non registered traces at the left, and the registered traces at the right.

The next figure is a zoom in two regions (leg and foot) to see the quality of elastic registration. Pay attention to the overlap of the two traces in the heel of the foot.

The next figure shows the overall quality of the elastic registration. In this figure we observe the difference image before and after registration. The quality of the elastic registration achieved is excellent.
